Are you referring to the stepper motor driver, DM556T? That's being supplied with 42v, and is rated up to 50vmax. I would have thought that there would already be some protection built in.One of the big problems I had with a similar setup was the back emf from the motors destroying the driver, especially with a power supply close to the maximum rating. According to the datasheet the driver mosfets are only rated for 50vdc. It doesent take an awful lot of back emf to push that above 50volts.
Both stepper motor spindles are difficult to turn when everything is switched on, as you would expect.The other was setting the motor current and microstepping.
With the driver powered, and no pulses, the motor spindle should be quite tight as the driver tries to hold the motor in position. At least this will tell you the driver is functioning to a point.
Surely it can't be this difficult to drive a couple of NEMA17s from a Pi?
