It's hard to make any suggestions with so much missing information (like which DSI display, what you have tried, ...)

RPiOS Trixe defaults to wayland/labwc not X11 for the desktop. So assuming your PI has the desktop OS installed and is configured to boot to the desktop what you're describing suggests that wayland/labwc has either failed to start or that your Pi is not configured to boot into the desktop.

Some suggestions:
  • Make sure your Pi is configured to boot into the desktop.
  • Look for related errors in the output from

    Code:

    dmesg
  • Look for related errors in the systemd journal (hint: journalctl)
  • Try labwc-pi instead of startx
  • If you actually want X11 use sudo raspi-config to change to it (look under Advanced options then Wayland).
