While correct for RPiOS Trixie and Bookworm OP hasn't told us what they are actually running.
The 400 pre dates Bookworm so a "gifted or regifted" 400 could be running Bullseye (or, maybe, Buster) which uses dhcpcd and/or ifupdown for network config not Network Manager (which won't even be installed).
@OP:
Unless you have a strong reason not to do so, your best option is to start with a clean installation of the latest RPiOS. If you don't you'll be constantly working with changes made by previous owners/users that you know nothing about.
