Just in case it is useful for anyone to know this:
Having also checked with Pimoroni (who could not have been more helpful), I went ahead and bought their NVMe Base and a Crucial P3+ 2TB NVMe 2280-size SSD. All seems to work perfectly. Obviously, I can't yet say how reliable it will be over several years but, so long as it keeps working, it is a perfect match for what I want.
Thanks again to all of you who made such helpful replies. This being so easy has made me start to think quite carefully how I can reorganise and rationalise my various Pi configurations. If I can figure out how to have a multi-OS setup that is reasonably straightforward to use, I should be able to simplify things quite nicely. It's a different topic, really, so I'll probably post one or two questions in a new thread soon ....![Cool 8-)]()
