So looking to jump ship on MS Windows once again. Did so a number of years ago to Slackware 4 , but had to go back for work with windows 7.
With my laptop near death, opted for a pi5, POE hat and M.2 hdd board.
Starting off with 2 screens (down from current 4), which I'll figure out adding the others later.
Would Ubuntu desktop be my best option or is there a better web browsing, video watching OS out there?
Currently running Ubuntu server on a number of machines in the house but do have a few PIOS systems as well.
Raspberry Pi OS but I wouldn't use the nightlies. Stick with the 64bit Desktop image available via Raspberry Pi Imager unless. For no other reason than it;s what most of us will be running if you need help.
Going over two screens might be tricky. Once you've used both HDMI ports your options are:
- DPI but this is a low level interfaces and uses all the GPIO.
- VGA via a simple resistor ladder and the above.
- The two DSI connectors but you'll need an adapter to drive a normal monitor from those.
- DIsplaylink v1 or a Pi zero running GUD over USB.
- SPI. Usually small and low resolution displays only.
There used to be boxes available that would split a higher resolution HDMI single across two monitors. No idea if they're still available and whether they will work with RPiOS or Linux in general.
