You didn't tell us which model Pi you're using, which OS you're running, which named release of that OS you're running, and (at least for RPiOS Bookworm) the date of the image you installed. That makes it harder to offer anything concrete.
You also didn't tell us what errors, if any, your code is throwing. Without those (and the info mentioned in the last paragraph) all we can do is guess. And I won't do that.
Right now, all I can suggest is that you apply what DS256 suggested and refer to the troubleshooting section of my guide(s) linked to above.
What I can say with confidence is that if you're using RPiOS Bookworm installed with the image released in October 2024 (or a later one) unless you explicitly configured things to do otherwise you'll be using wayland and labwc for the desktop backend so anything lxde related will not work.
RPiOS Bookowrm prior to that defaulted to wayland with wayfire on all PI models with 2GB RAM or more and X11 with lxde on the others.
RPiOS Bullseye and earlier default to X11 with lxde on all PI models.
Unless, of course, you installed the lite image then there is no default desktop.
I thought this was a general Linux question... but not so. The details you asked for were absolutely needed to answer this specific question.
If anyone else lands here with a similar problem, your best bet is to get acquainted with that guide, and take the time to find out what is actually running. Mine was Bookworm with wayland and lxde. Yours may not.
