Thank you for this!vcdbg has been replaced by vclog. If it's not available on Ubuntu, you can easily build and install it yourself from our utils repo: https://github.com/raspberrypi/utils/tree/master/vclog
Once you've built and installed it, "sudo vclog -m" will display the relevant messages from the firmware.
