A fully isolated solution could be achieved using opto coupler. You could use single channel as 4N25 but this could be bulky. There are 4 channel available in one package, e.g.TCMT4100.
From the Pi side, use a resistor in series with a LED on the optocoupler. On the legacy device, measure voltage on the button (you need to know where plus and minus is) and solder the coupler transistor to each button with two thin (short, not more than 30cm) wires.
If you have fun in designing mechanics, you could use rc servo to press the buttons mechanically.
