Hello Everyone,
I’m working on a Raspberry Pi with the IMX296 camera. I have cloned the GScrop repository and followed the instructions to modify the kernel and configure the camera. My goal is to increase the frame rate up to 500 FPS while using a cropped resolution.
Here’s what I have done so far:
Cloned the repo and built GScrop.
Modified the kernel settings and camera configuration to support higher FPS.
Tried running the command: sudo GScrop 640 420 536 5000
Expected behavior: Capture video at 500+ FPS with a 640×420 crop.
Actual behavior:
The crop works, the video resolution is correct (640×420).
The FPS reported in FFmpeg/log is high (536 FPS), but the actual average FPS achieved is ~60 FPS.
I also tried smaller crops, but still cannot achieve the expected FPS.
but I’m not sure how to properly configure the Pi or GScrop to achieve higher FPS.
Environment:
Raspberry Pi 4 / 5
IMX296 camera
Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit)
libcamera v0.6.0+rpt20251202
PiSP v1.3.0
Could anyone guide me on:
The maximum achievable FPS for my crop sizes on this sensor.
Proper configuration steps to maximize FPS.
Any alternatives to GScrop for high-speed crop capture on Raspberry Pi.
