It's desired by you, and...who else? It's been like this for 13 years (probably), but I will see if there is any interest in changing the settings that have been like this for...13 years.
Any interest from whom? The people who set it up and didn't think about it again? The new users who post and never get any notification of replies and never check for them and just leave?

The entire purpose of my post was to start a discussion (what discussion forums are, er, for), not to be dismissed because "that's the way we've always done it".

But, I seem to have engaged someone who might be in a position to change something, so there's that. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure that "I will see if there is any interest in changing the settings" means it was not dismissed, despite my attempts to duplicate your sarcasm (Yes, I do read your posts ;-))
So. How are we getting on?

I've seen several posts recently that looked interesting, looked to be genuine (not spammers or AI slop), with supportive replies and good suggestions. The OP in each case hasn't come back to continue the discussion, and hasn't logged in again.

It's speculation, of course, but I believe the posters did not get a notification of replies, and therefore assumed their posts got no interest, and so haven't come back.

I haven't had confirmation that this feature is off by default when a new account is created, but, the feature exists, so all I'm asking is that it should be turned on.

When I created my account I immediately noticed that I wasn't getting notifications on replies. I assumed there was a feature to provide this that just wasn't turned on, so I looked for one, found it, and turned it on. Not everyone is going to do this. That was a while ago, but nobody has ever mentioned it in the meantime. I really think it's an issue that negatively affects new users, hence my continual posts about it.
