I might be making progress with this. After looking around in the Imager, I found the option to format the SD card, so I ran it and then ran the OctoPi image. This time it worked. I'm wondering now if the card needs to have a certain cluster size in order to work.
I might investigate that further.
I will note that the Imager still unmounts the drive letter after verification.
Perhaps it's also important to note that I'm using Windows 10 to create the image; having worked on UNIX and Linux systems in the past, I suspect that the code is written for standard Linux behavior where the unmount is (or used to be) common.
Onward to the next step.... time to boot up
