It is with great shame that I report that this entire issue was fixed just by replacing my SD card....... ![:oops:]( "Embarrassed")
Flashed the latest x64 image, booted, ran updates, connected to Wi-Fi, rebooted several times, and it's still working fine.
Switched from a 16 GB ADATA card to a new 64 GB Samsung card.
The previous card was used to run Pi-hole some time last year.
