You're doing it wrong. No wonder you spent all day struggling.
ummmmmmmmmmmm, no. same laptop using same file I pulled down in aug with and without pi imager. same results.

Step 1 - Download Pi OS image
yep, did that today and fell back to older file. used more than 1 pi on more than 1 card. 0 working
- Windows: use Balena Etcher
yep. used the latest version downloaded today. see above for results

When you boot the first time there might be a delay while the partitions are expanded and the system reboots. Connect a monitor and keyboard and you can see what's going on, and set everything up. It will take you 10 minutes.
finally had to move things to where I could hook up monitor/keyboard. I see ssh keys being generated, reboot, forces me to enter misc items like username, pw, keyboard. all done and still no connection. both boxes had an ip, could ping out but not allowed to receive a connection from my main box. pretty much what I said and started with

yes, I've spent usually 10 mins setting up the headless version then went on to what I going to work on. so far I've only been fighting with an install. bottom line, seems like there have been some bad changes with things. like the same simple processes and steps we've done for years now are not working
