I've had several times where my phone or laptop will show the AP, but connection attempts fail. I've repeated this with several different devices. Beamforming requires multiple antennas. This is using the on-pcb antenna of the Pi. I believe it is the wifi protocol on the Pi trying to maintain a baseline quality for the connection, and if it sees an attempt to connect with a weak signal, it ignores it.
