Small update. I've made it work, although did not identify the root cause. I checked my journalctl logs and found notifications about certificate problems (this is experimental setup, I'm using old WRT54GL, pure WPA was used before), interleaved with notifications suggesting connectivity problems with the access point. Without further step-by-step analysis, I updated RPi Imager to 2.0.0, changed certificates to WPA/WPA2, and put the access point closer to my desk. Now everything works smoothly, both under NetworkManager and systemd-networkd. So, apologies for a premature alarm, should have taken a closer look at the stuff before. Anyway, thanks for responding.
