Re-reading the posts above I spotted the recommendation to use CTRL+ALT+F1 to drop right out of the GUI. I had previously been using the shell window to check if the keyboard worked outside the GUI. I have just used CTRL+ALT+F1 and the keyboard has come back to life. I have gone around the loop of using shut down to log in and the keyboard is now working in the GUI.
This all seems very odd to me, so if anybody can explain what is happening and how to make the system operate more normally I would appreciate it.
