All right so in case somebody else find this thread, i managed to fix the issue... kind of.
I configured the rasperry pi using 'sudo raspi-config', System Options, then Boot, to configure the Pi to boot into command line instead of the desktop GUI.
From the command line, i run kodi-standalone which works fine.
I'll have to see if i can automate some of it (probably a cron job to restart kodi-standalone on reboot), but it doesn't really matter since i don't reboot all that often anyway.
At least my problem is fixed.
