Can you share the aplay command you used ?
What kind of audio did you try to play ? mp3 or wav ?
Maybe you have a configuration to do with amixer ?

I'm using this in my conf file :
MACHINE_FEATURES += "alsa"
MACHINE_ESSENTIAL_EXTRA_RDEPENDS += " alsa-state "
