I did some further testing, I connected the SSD and started running Jeff's benchmark https://github.com/geerlingguy/pi-clust ... nchmark.sh to hopefully draw the max power the SSD can from the port. While running I attached a power bank with a USB power meter and measured 0.4A. So technically this setup was drawing 1.8-1.9A if the drive actually pulled 1.5A which is something the Pi shouldn't be able to supply and thus fail. But everything worked perfectly so it can't be a power issue. Something else is causing the issue.
