"imx296 10-001a" is telling you that it is trying to communicate with the sensor on i2c-10 at address 001a.
i2c-10 is cam1, so will fail if you have connected to cam0. If you've used "dtoverlay=imx296,cam0" then you should get 00-001a as cam0 uses i2c-0.
The Waveshare wiki page list 4 versions of that board. Which version do you have? There is no point in checking the schematics of all of them for any weird quirks that can creep in.
Also please confirm that you've connected the FFC with the contacts facing towards the middle of the board.
