Generally you'll want to do some processing on that for lens shading and black level compensation, and that means running it through the ISP. The ISP doesn't have a configuration for producing just a Y (luma) channel for monochrome, but YUV420 and ignoring the 2 chroma planes is as easy and gets effectively the same result.
Well, I understood that this is what I need, judging by the image I received after capture, a monochrome 8-bit image? I didn't notice any artifacts or incompatibilities.
You can use V4L2 natively to capture frames from the sensor rather than sending them through the CFE, but you'll need to reconfigure the pipeline with Media Controller (media-ctl) first. There are a number of threads on here about doing that for TC358743 and ADV7282 as they are HDMI and composite video capture devices respectively, hence don't want to go through the CFE.
I configured it, but I still couldn't get an image directly from V4L2. To be honest, I reconfigured the pipeline so much that my camera disappeared from the system. I couldn't get it back, so I had to reinstall the OS. Maybe you can tell me what exactly needs to be changed?
