Our local prices:
Pi 5 4 GB AU$106.95 + official power supply $21.07 = $128.02
Pi 4 8 GB $134.57 + $11.90 = $146.47
The Pi 5 wins.

My choice:
Pi 5 8 GB $142.60 + official power supply $21.07 = $163.67

I had a 4 GB notebook running Linux and the memory usage started at 1.6 GB with daily usage applications opened. The usage would go up to 2.6 when the applications all had files and tabs open. The rest of memory was the file cache and that started filling up when I upgraded to a 1 TB SSD. I had to add extra memory to keep good performance for file searches or anything else file related.

Now, when I plug in 4 TB photo archives, I need 16 GB as the file cache often reaches 12 GB. This is just searching for and browsing the images, not editing images.

I do not need the active cooler for this usage, low cost copper heatsinks work. You would need the active cooler for the Pi if your workload was recompiling a big application or the OS. :o
