Having a look at xrdp just popped up on my todo list, hence the delay.
I installed a fresh RasPiOS (with Desktop), enabled X11, rebooted, and then installed xrdp.
Connecting to it failed with a few less-than-helpful messages, but I searched on one of them ("systemd-logind Failed to restore VT, ignoring: Bad file descriptor"), and ended up on a page from 2021 where someone suggested installing xorgxrdp as well.
Once I installed that, inbound rdp just worked, with no other changes.
EDIT: One anomaly: Clicking LOGOUT from the menu on the Raspberry logs out the session on the console as well. Closing the Windows MSTSC works fine, and doesn't kill the console login session.
