The looks like a seller's pix. Does your board look exactly like that, or more like the one in the other thread?
The picture I put up and the one in the other thread (and one of my boards) all look the same to me.
Given that one of the boards seems to be fine, maybe the circuit really is okay
Actually the boards that work as expected are not the same, they are the "tiny" version which has a smaller footprint and fewer GPIO available (without extra and non viable soldering).
I have ordered some more boards from a different supplier to see if there is a difference because I am a sucker. Unfortunately these ones have just enough GPIO within the footprint to fit in the space I have.
So as to not waste everybody's time I originally posted this question in case someone came back with a response along the lines of "you have to disable the xyz register and invert the abc something to disable default ADC pull downs" but alas I am getting the sense that it is in fact the lesson "buy cheap buy twice" and there is nothing to be done in this instance other than hope it is a defective batch/supplier.
