Thanks I will try thatOne possible strategy.
Unplug the external device.
Run dmesg. Look at the end of the output and make a mental note of the last timestamp.
Plug in the external device.
Run dmesg (again).
Information added subsequent to the timestamp you noted is probably related to the detection of the device you are investigating.
You will need to have booted from some media other than the suspect usb device(s) to investigate those device(s).
