OP is booting to console. That will always use the mode specified by (a valid) video= in cmdline.txt.Wouldn't be surprised to see the Pi 'drop' to the switch box preferred resolution as my Pi is ignoring the video mode stated in kernel command line and is always (!) picking up the preferred timing after boot ... but maintaining the margins![:?:]( "Question")

If you boot to desktop, then it's more complicated.
You'll likely have to also specify your desired mode in the relevant desktop config files.
