Forgive my tardy response to your reply @kerry_s.
Forgive my lack of detail knowledge regarding X11, as I understand it, it is a communications protocol that is used between one device and the next. If that is what XRDP uses to provide a remote desktop login over the local network then that is indeed what I am using.
I did look at TigerVNC and whilst it did work as a way to connect, the display was compressed window and the display it gave was inferior and far from the clarity that windows remote desktop (mstsc.exe) has when loging into it with xrdp on the Pi. VNC was fuzzy as if out of focus which wasn't good for my aged eyes and I am surprised so many people use it.
I had to look up what wayland/wayfire is that you mention but I think we may be talking at cross purposes.
To crown things off, there were some updates today that when they installed killed the ability to login to the Pi using MSTSC as I have been doing, there were about 70 updates in the pack that listed form the update but reading the list gave no real hint to me as which was causing the problem which manifests itself as terminating the login as soon as you press enter after the password. I have spent some time searching from info on each package that was listed from the update but as there is no real defined place to get the necessary in for for linux it is a pretty hopeless case. Dare I say it is has seriously made me re-think the idea of switching to linux on PCs which I have been building to do.
I am not sure I have the patience to go through the update list 1 package at a time to find out which one is the cause of the problem. Neither do I know where to feedback on the issue so that the developers know.
