I think I found the root cause of my problems with VLC: low frame rate. The client's files were 25 frames/sec. I replaced them with test files created from taking videos with my smartphone(frame rate 55). They play without strange random freezing. Once I discovered this, google "low frame rate video causes vlc to stop working" brings up number of articles on it. Will try some of the remedies outlined in:
