making changes to a pre existing osk like squeekboard would be preferable but i dont know rust or oml for maalit which also has problems.

its not a problem if the project is onerous if it ends up in a useable osk for wayland.

i just need to know where to look
Well, you could learn Rust. If the changes you need to make are quite small then you could probably figure out the bits of the language you need quite quickly.

Same for Malitt. Learn what you need. Apply it.

As for where to look, well, google?

Frankly speaking, if you can't find how to start, what direction to take, or where to look, I don't fancy your chances of success.

An alternative approach would be to make suggestions on the squeekboard GitHub which someone might be motivated to implement.
