There are ways to do what you want, but they are outside the canon.
I.e., I can't really go into the details here - certainly not without knowing your general knowledge and experience level. (*)
But two comments do come to mind:
1) Look into something called PINN - which is the currently accepted tool for having multiple OSes on a single card (and when you boot it up, you get a menu from which you can choose which OS to then boot).
2) Yes, you should buy (at least one) additional SD card. They are cheap and having lots of them is pretty standard among RPi users.
Footnote: (*) To clarify, what is tricky is doing it all on one single SD card, without losing any data (or having to backup to another drive or computer). If you are willing to start over from scratch (using PINN) on a new card (or to trash the one you have), then its not too complex...
