We have been using i3wm/X11 for the past 8 years. We deployed over 1500 pis across our campus over those 8 years. They run most of our AV systems as well as scheduling panels and time clocks as well as other systems.
We have been deploying these systems in kiosk mode and point Chromium to a local webserver on the pi running as a docker container. There are backend services that also run as docker containers on these pis.
We moved to Bookworm when it came out, we kept with i3wm out of inertia. At first, things were working fine, it's only been the last three months where Chromium seems to be struggling after patching with crashes with this last patch cycle causing chromium to crash every day.
Based on what you said though, we will look into moving from i3wm to Labwc and see if we can get things working quickly.
