After more reboots than I care to admit, I think the drive being attached may be a red herring. Apparently the issue seems to be with rebooting. If the power is interrupted, the system boots normally into GUI with or without the external drive now. However, if the system is restarted, no matter how (sudo shutdown -r now, sudo reboot, choosing restart from the menu, hitting the button, whatever) it hangs with a flashing cursor. SSH works, meaning the OS loads, but no desktop. I have to shut down completely, cutting the power off, and then the system finally restarts.
