I do have a backup of the most important things, but I'd rather try to recover the system. I don't know if there's any other method besides what I've mentioned.
I can now recover from scratch in 20 to 40 minutes depending how recent the last recovery was. My first attempt with loads of bloat and customisations I had added was in a number of hours, I'm thankful for seeing the error of my ways.
