Since rpios Bookworm you need to edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
Comment out any lines referring to LXDE-pi-x or labwc
then add the user-session=your DE of choice
I use xfce so mine has user-session=XFCE
Next in your /home
Backup ~/.dmrc then create a new one
add the line Session=your DE of choice
For example mine shows:
[Desktop]
Session=xfce
Language=en_US.utf8

sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
systemctl get-default
If result is multi-user.target, then set to graphical target with
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
