Automation, sensing and robotics • Re: A computer that measures the temperature

Just a warning here about fake tuya sensors. Now that I managed to get my existing sensors working with Home Assistant I thought I'd buy a third and stick it outside (under cover - they are not waterproof). I noticed that the supplier I linked previously had put their price up not long after I posted link so I had a browse on ebay. Got an unsolicited seller offer for a cheap but not unbelievably cheap price and all specs were the same and supposedly a UK stock seller. Took 2 weeks to arrive but more importantly is a fake and is not a tuya protocol device. Instead it wants me to download something called CozyLife app which has mostly 1 star reviews on Play Store and in any case doesn't work with Home Assistant. Yes, I did try to connect via tuya anyway and device is not even seen.

I thought these tuya sensors would be too cheap for anyone to bother faking but I guess the hardware is the same and they just don't pay for a tuya licence. I have never had a seller actually make me an offer for a fake before and I don't see the point in that as presumably they want to boost their ratings for a product by giving me a good deal but actually achieving the opposite result.

So if you buy one make sure you get it from a seller who has sold a lot of them (as I did for my first 2) so you can check reviews. This was a new stock item from my fake seller but they did have good previous ratings. Some searching shows I'm by no means the first person to have bought a tuya temperature sensor and got this cozylife nonsense instead.
