Have you tried another Pico, tried this Pico on another PC or ideally a Pi ?

Always entering BOOTSEL mode suggest valid firmware hasn't been burned into the Flash. So every time the Pico is plugged in it goes back into BOOTSEL mode. Or it could be as simple as the BOOTSEL button being broken and always appearing pressed or other reasons.

My gut feeling would also be that it's the wrong firmware for the type of board you have.

The advantage of using a Pi is that 'dmesg' should show what's going on when the Pico is connected and after the '.uf2' is dragged to it. I don't know what would be the equivalent for Windows.
Thank you! I bought another Pico and installed the same firmware. It works fine, so I guess the previous one was damaged.
