Thanks for your reply 6by9. The issue was the J6 jumpers. All is good now.There is no camera or display autodetection on Compute Modules - both must be configured explicitly via dtoverlay= lines.
CM5IO boards also need jumpers installing on J6 if you want to use CAM/DISP1.
Which camera modules do you have, and what dtoverlay lines have you tried?
If connected to CAM/DISP1 (and have jumpers on J6), then
V1 / OV5647 - "dtoverlay=ov5647"
V2 / IMX219 - "dtoverlay=imx219"
V3 / IMX708 - "dtoverlay=imx708"
HQ / IMX477 - "dtoverlay=imx477"
GS / IMX296 - "dtoverlay=imx296".
If using CAM/DISP0, then you need to append ",cam0" to the end of those lines, eg "dtoverlay=ov5647,cam0".
I finally found the CM5 IO board Datasheet manual, which really explained a lot.
I am currently using the V2 / IMX219 - "dtoverlay=imx219" camera in CSI port CAM/Disp 0.
I need to add V3 / IMX708 - "dtoverlay=imx708" for my V3 camera as well.
