The pipeline is unconfigured by default, so pipeline validation fails.
libcamera will configure it, and that isn't reset after libcamera quits, therefore you can manually stream at the same resolution afterwards. Changing resolution will require a full pipeline reconfiguration.
My actual issue here is that a once working program of mine is now broken, and I am trying to fix it. It set the pixelformat of an ov9281 the same way that media/v4l/capture.c does it (and the v4l2-ctl does too, I suppose). Since my program digest frames at 140fps in a RPI3 (just a small region must be processed) , the use of libcamera was not an option. Perhaps things have changed now and libcamera can simply hand me the raw buffers without further processing, but two years ago V4L2 was the way to go.
