I don't think that SSD compatibility is an issue right now because I get similar behaviour if my PCIe cable is unplugged. I am going over to his house Tuesday to swap hardware. B) there is no device on the bus at all (or you've disconnected the cable)
is your SSD stated as 'compatible' on either Argon40 or i.e. Pimoroni website?
Will your SSD work in your friends case? If not it's the NVMe which is non-compatible.
