Thanks for your replies.

Yes, I was aware of the Pi5 having built in wifi but I wasn't able to get it to work and I couldn't see any reference to wlan0, only loopback and the ethernet connection.

Due to this I thought I would go down the usb dongle route and whilst I can see this when I run lsusb (it shows as "Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter) that's as far as I can get.

I have noticed though that when I run dsmesg I can see it under the usb sections but then under a "mt760lu" section there is a message of "Direct firmware load for mt760lu.bin failed with error -2" and also "probe of 3-1:1.0 failed with error -2".
I downloaded a version of the mt760lu.bin and placed it in /lib/firmware but this hasn't resolved it.

Do you think starting over with a clean install is likely to resolve this issue?
Thanks.
I think that you would be better trying to find out why the internal adaptor isn't working before you add the additional complication of a second adaptor. The fact that it doesn't work with the external adaptor either; suggests that the internal adaptor may not be the issue.

First; start with a fresh and unmolested new installation..(With a good quality SD card and official power supply). Remove any external devices; such as that adaptor.

Is the Pi in a case: if so; which case? Is it metal or plastic? If it's metal; take it out!

Then tell us...what is the output of ifconfig?
