I think you’re correct. Raspberry Pi OS has migrated from wayfire to labwc, which no longer seems to trigger the issues mentioned.For anyone reading this with the latest Raspbian. Ignore the start of the thread, you should already have the virtual keyboard installed.
It's called squeekboard https://github.com/raspberrypi-ui/squeekboard and it works fine with wayland and labwc.
If you don't see it, run raspi-config and enable it under "Display Options". That's it.
