It worked this time. And I realize I have the 32 bit lite OS and not the 64 bit. I was wondering why I was getting that warning.
I will try it again with another NVME SSD using the same type of hardware but using the 64-bit lite os.
I know I used full-upgrade before when it failed, but I am sure I did something wrong to cause it. I just cannot imagine what. I did have to intervene and change the cmdline.txt file which is something I had not had to do before, that I can remember anyway.
So thank you for pushing me to do sudo apt update and sudo apt full-upgrade. I had not even know about it until just before when it failed (a second time). I had always updated using sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade, for years.
