It could be an EDID issue with your TV. If you remove the SD card or USB drive that you are using to boot, and power up while connected to your TV, you should get a diagnostic screen which will give some information.
Thanks. That's rather different to what I've previously experienced with the diagnostic display but it was indeed useful -

I presume "DISP0" is what is called "HDMI-A-1" elsewhere, and would seem to be given there's only one display connected and it found that.

From "EDID ok" I presume it is able to pick up the EDID, which I had expected as that had previously worked.
however, you can set the resolution manually:
video=HDMI-A-1:1024x768@60D
Thanks for that. I don't recall ever having to have used that but added 'video=HDMI-A-1:1920x1080@60D' and that seems to have improved things - We can figure out how to boot to TV and monitor which doesn't need that later.

That runs through all the boot messages, launches a desktop which disappears within a second. But at least I am seeing a desktop now, even if onlly fleetingly.

Updated : I have my Pi micro-HDMI to full-size lead going to a manual two-way switcher, STB to the other input, full-size output to full-size input of the TV. I have discovered that if I change the input away from Pi to STB then back again, the TV then displays the Desktop and keeps it there.

I took the 'video=' option out and the display again blanks after the first few boot messages. But switching inputs now brings it back.

So it seems what I thought wasn't working was sort-of working, just that I couldn't see it. The question is perhaps why the TV doesn't display the Desktop unless its input is switched. It used to display using the same SD Card when booted on the Pi 3B without having to do that. It also does need the input physically switching. Changing input source or turning the TV off and on doesn't cause the Desktop to appear.

It's weird it blanks after the initial boot messages without 'video=' but un-blanks and continues with other boot messages when 'video=' is used. Mabe that provides a pointer to what the issue is ?

Arrgh : Desktop appears for just a second then blanks, needs the input witching to bring it back.
