Pimoroni has what they call an “experimental” build - and it works - but I doubt it is ready for educational use.
The Pico 1 W remains a capable microcontroller and I am not throwing mine away.
Rather than relying on Thonny for tracking downloads, the Micropython website lists all releases and has links to release notes.
