By "putty", I assume you mean "ssh", and not the compound people use to keep their windows in their frames.
Anyway, there are pure command line ways to analyze and fix this problem, which I am sure other forum posters will provide, but it sounds like you're not really comfortable with that sort of thing.
Therefore, the standard advice applies. Get another SD card, install a new system on it, get that new system booted, then put the old card in a USB card reader/writer, mount that card under the new system. Analyze what's on the old card and fix the problem(s). Done.
BTW, it is likely (possible) that the problem is the old "I failed to mount something (e.g., an external drive), then copied files to the directory that I thought was mounted to the external drive and filled up my root partition because I thought I was copying stuff to the external drive, but in fact I was copying it to the root partition" problem.
