I have my theories but more interesting is what the Pi 500 will have. I would expect a 4GB model so the premium over a Pi 400 is minimised, and 8GB model for those who feel that is too limited, with the possibility of 16GB in the future noted.I really don’t get the “I don’t see a need for more than 4GB so nobody else should” solipsism.
Given CM4 appeared to me to have evolved from Pi 4B, Pi 400 evolved from CM4, providing side-products along the way, I'd expect the same again - That the Pi 500 will have one external USB2 port and two USB3, and also an option for on-board NVMe.
Assuming that, in terms of cost, the Pi 400 is $15 more than a Pi 4B 4GB. I would expect a Pi 500 to likely be about $15 more than a PI 5 plus M.2 HAT+ or it risks making a Pi 500 system cheaper than a Pi 5 desktop system. So my guess is Pi 500 4GB at $90, 8GB at $110.
Since creating my Pi Cost Calculator I am more able to get better costings without a lot of manual calculations. For the basic 4GB entry level system, presumptions and E&OE, built from parts and ignoring any full kit offerings -
