Show us a picture of your OLED. Also, try to look for pictures of similar boards on online malls and see if any of them mention the driver chip used. Some might mention a driver chip other than SSD1306. Many bulk sellers don't really keep track of such info, especially if they are offering a selection of boards [1].

White dots on black sounds line random data. Yeah, I've seen that once -- I bought two types of OLEDs from a seller selling cheapo stuff. One worked with the SSD1306 Pico C SDK example and the other turned out to be SH1106. I had to change a few lines to get something on the screen, because while the startup sequence is compatible, SSD1306 has more convenient auto-increment across memory pages so it's easier to push data.

[Edit] [1] Or, there may be smartasses in Shenzhen who keeps volunteering to everyone within earshot that these are all SSD1306 OLEDs and while they feel good being so unselfishly helpful, unfortunately they pollute the ecosystem with incorrect assumptions. Just traders being traders. A lot of these are packed and sealed in anti-static bags and labeled, BUT, they should put driver IC info on the labels in addition to the OLED size / resolution. I consider it par for the course when buying cheapo.
