In C, you can call fsync () and similar functions. One commits to the disk but the data may still be in the disk cache. Another waits for the disk to respond when the data is on the media instead of in the cache. It gets complicated across different devices because they might not respond.
Some disks have ram cache. Some SSDs have SLC as a cache to TLC or QLD.
