Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac • How is the GUI optimised?

This OS versus ARM Raspberry Pi OS versus other Debian based Linux distributions with GUI. How is this Intel desktop built and optimised? Is it the same as the build and optimised ARM GUI? If I use the Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac on my old Intel machine, will it work the same as on my Pi 4/5?

From my experience some years ago with LXDE, Xfce, and Cinnamon with effects switched off, there was not much difference in performance with a medium level Intel notebook. LXDE had some configuration problems. But LXDE runs smooth and fast on my ARM Pi due to some magic from the Pi OS dev team. The problems I hit with LXDE in other distributions, difficult menu setup, etc, are not in the Pi GUI.

Plus I need the same base, bookworm, as the change from bullseye to bookworm was a lot of work. I do not want to maintain two configurations.

What makes your LXDE better?

The Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac current download is a bit old for use on my Intel based machine. The choice is to use this OS and lots of updates plus PPAs or whatever or to use another Debian based light weight GUI distribution. That others, the ones I tested, are not as smooth as my ARM Pi.

If I could build an Intel desktop OS, I would take all the best of the ARM Pi OS and Linux Mint. Currently I install some of the LM features on my Pi 5 as it has the GPU to run nice utility applications. Reproducing the light weight GUI of the Pi OS on Mint might be safer in the long run than depending on updates to the he Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac.
