sdm has a new plugin to update partitions on a disk as part of the burn process. This includes

• Expanding the root partition to a specified size
• Adding new partitions

I haven't tried this on a non-sdm-customized IMG, though. It might work without having used sdm to customize the IMG. However, if it doesn't, you can use sdm to do a "super-light" customization to your IMG such that the appropriate sdm bits are stuffed into the IMG.
